Amitabh Kant
IAS 1980, Kerala cadre (retired)
10days after leaving India's G20 Sherpa. Then Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd, HCL Technologies Ltd, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, and others.
The cooling-off rule
16 Jun 2025 (resignation as G20 Sherpa announced) to 26 Jun 2025 (Fairfax announcement). Later moves: HCLTech 84 days, IndiGo 91, L&T 135, ITC 199.
The rule: All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958, rule 26: a pensioner shall not accept commercial employment within one year of retirement without previous sanction of the Central Government.
Rule 26 counts one year from the date of retirement from the Service. Kant retired from the IAS before his NITI Aayog/G20 contract posts (The Hindu calls him 'a retired 1980-batch' officer); his superannuation date and whether any sanction was sought for the Fairfax role are not on record in sources found. IndiGo appointment followed MoCA security clearance (a separate aviation-sector requirement).

What the office had to do with the company
No dated official decision or contact between Kant (in office) and Fairfax or its Indian companies was found. Businessworld: 'There is no public evidence that Kant had a role in the IDBI transaction while in government, or that his Fairfax advisory assignment covered IDBI.' The IDBI EoI (7 Oct 2022) was issued while Kant was G20 Sherpa; no source puts him in the IDBI process. Congress (Pawan Khera, 30 Oct 2026) asked 'What is the role of Amitabh Kant in the IDBI Bank disinvestment deal?' — a question, not a sourced overlap.
